Investigating localized proteostasis to sustain synaptic plasticity

Project ongoing

Project Overview

The mammalian brain comprises millions of neurons that constantly communicate through connections known as synapses. Synapses are plastic and adapt their macromolecule composition and structure to the stimulus they receive. The essential macromolecules for synapses to function are proteins. The synthesis of proteins at synapsis is critical to reinforce connections and storing memories. This proposal will investigate the molecular events that allow synaptic proteins to function. Loos of synaptic protein function is associated with neurodegenerative diseases. As such, this proposal will help us better understand the molecular events maintaining healthy synaptic connections that sustain brain functions.
